The Def Leppard logo, portrayed through a mesmerizing shattered glass design, takes on a captivating form in the form of a round vinyl sticker or a printed vinyl decal. This unique and eye-catching emblem encapsulates the spirit and energy of one of rock music’s most iconic bands. The logo is a powerful representation of Def Leppard’s ability to break barriers, overcome challenges, and leave an everlasting impact on the music world.
In the early days of the band’s formation, before they became the renowned rock legends they are today, Def Leppard had a rather peculiar beginning. The band’s original name was Deaf Leopard, a moniker that was first coined by Joe Elliott during his school days back in 1975. However, the members quickly realized that the name might give the wrong impression and be associated with the emerging punk rock scene, which they did not align with.
Tony Kenning, the drummer of the band at the time, was particularly concerned about the name’s potential punk connotation. In an effort to distance themselves from that image, the musicians made the decision to rename the band. They settled on the name Def Leppard, which, despite the similarity to the iconic Led Zeppelin, was not intentionally derived from it.
To create the new name, Tony Kenning took a creative approach. He simply drew a line through the letter ‘A’ in “Deaf” and added a line down the letter ‘O’ in “Leopard.” This modification allowed them to maintain the original spelling while adding a touch of graffiti-like style to the name. Little did they know at the time that this alteration would lead to a comparison with Led Zeppelin.
It was only about a month later when someone wrote out the name again that they noticed the resemblance to Led Zeppelin. However, rather than feeling concerned or bothered by the similarity, the band members actually embraced it. They considered it a preferable association compared to being linked to a band like The Flying Lizards, who were known for their quirky and unconventional style.
In retrospect, Joe Elliott admits that the name Def Leppard may seem silly, but he draws a parallel to racehorses and their often eccentric names. Just as racehorses frequently have peculiar and amusing names, the band’s choice of name reflects their desire to stand out and make a memorable impression.
Despite the initial uncertainty surrounding the name, Def Leppard would go on to achieve immense success in the world of rock music. With lead singer Joe Elliott, bass player Rick “Sav” Savage, guitarist Pete Willis, and drummer Tony Kenning (who would later be replaced by Rick Allen), the band would leave an indelible mark on the music industry, becoming one of the most influential and enduring rock bands of all time.
